Jared Diamond's analysis of human history and progress in Guns, Germs, and Steel contains a chapter titled "Invention's Mother". Jared Diamond cleverly reminds us invention is often the mother of necessity. Furthermore, Scientists and engineers recognize their work builds upong the discoveries and inventions of others However, unlike many conservatives who proudly and often smugly wear the supply-side monicer today (eg. George Gilder), I believe in a balance where the survival of our free enterprise system must be given sufficient weight to keep populism at bay. The Defining Moment reminds us of an era when we needed every bit of economic energy we could muster to just to keep the future open for supply-side ingenuity. |
